We’re looking for volunteers!

Do you have some spare time, love history, and all things heritage?  The Swan Guildford Historical Society is looking for volunteers, administration staff, tour guides, researchers and more.

Our volunteers work in TWO different areas.   Tour guides at the Colonial Gaol meet and greet visitors, and take them on a tour that describes law and order, and everyday living  during Guildford’s Colonial days.  The tour continues with a visit to Taylor’s Cottage, a quaint 19th Century workers cottage where Edward Taylor, an ex convict lived and raised numerous children, with his wife Emma.  If time permits, visitors are shown an outdoors wash house, once a feature of Western Australian homes from the early 1900’s through to the 1960’s.

New tour guides are trained using a buddy system.  A manual containing core information sheets is provided that describes important points to include.  New guides also learn by shadowing a more experienced person during tours, until they are confident about conducting a tour on their own.  Tour guides work to a weekly roster that covers opening hours for the Gaol and Taylor’s Cottage, ie each Tuesday to Saturday, from 9.30 am, to 2pm.  You decide the day that suits you to volunteer.

Volunteer opportunities are also available at our headquarters, 119 Swan Street Guildford.  Here, volunteers are involved in ‘back of house’ work, doing tasks such as scanning photos, accessioning items, preparing displays, or data entry under the Curator’s supervision,

We value the work our volunteers do.  Without them, the Society could not collect and accession items for the collection, or maintain our museum where visitors can learn about Guildford’s fascinating history.  Are you interested in joining us, and working to make the Swan Guildford Historical Society great?

Come and visit us, phone or email us to find out more about volunteering in areas that interest you most.  Our headquarters (Judy Hamersley House, 119 Swan Street Guildford) is staffed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9.30 am -5.00 pm.  If the office is closed, call us on (08) 9379 1829.  Leave a message and we will call you back.  OR email your enquiry to [email protected]
